As an HR manager, you stand as a team leader. Today, please take a moment to pause and reflect on your interactions with your team. Have you ever sent out greeting cards to your employees? Have you said a simple “hi” or greeted them with a smile? Did you manage to wish them well during trying times or have you commended them for a job well done? Things could have been better if you did. Are you aware that these simple acts of kindness matter?
Leadership is often seen as a business when in fact it should involve building relationships, consisting of employee engagement and encouragement for them to reach their full potential. It’s not about being in a higher position, looking down at people from your high seat. It’s more of sitting with them at the low chairs to know about how you can help them.
Building relationships with the people in the company is something important. After all, you are working as a team. Without them, nothing can work. We cannot deny that an environment with open communication and healthy relationships encourages productivity, loyalty, and job satisfaction. It would also pave the way for high levels of employee performance as they are energized and inspired to do better.
The simple things mentioned above such as giving a warm greeting, remembering their birthdays, or showing that you care are genuine acts that can make a huge difference. It holds power, more than you could ever imagine. Imagine a person having a bad day or someone who lost a loved one but still went to work. Won’t it make their day less heavy if you greet them or send your condolences to them? As an employee, wouldn’t you want to work with a boss who cares about a positive work environment? Of course, you would!
It is essential to treat your employees like how you’d want to be treated if you were in their shoes. Simply care and be genuine because a simple act of kindness toward your employees matters. Stop thinking of employees as robots rather than treat them as warmly as possible. Keep in mind that we all have silent battles day by day. A small gesture that might mean nothing to you could contribute a lot to that employee’s experience. Before we are leaders, executives, or HR professionals, we are humans. Let’s strive to lead with empathy, originality, and compassion, recognizing that true leadership begins with the power of simple acts.
